40 horsepower mercury motor11/7/2022 One guy said that the fuel pump diaphram was bad and flooding the engine from the bulb. One place suggested replacing the black tubing with gray tubing. I've read that it could be the ignition switch and I've read what sounds like a vapor lock. The bulb at first feels soft but we can squeeze until it gets tight.still no joy. It does smell like gas, so I'm thinking flooded. Can't push up the main throttle - there is no out of gear button/lever. If none of this works, could be something electrical. We've tried multiple things. We've lived the crank throttle all the way and let the starter whine for up to 15-20 seconds (don't want to burn out the starter). Close throttle to just cracked open, then squeeze bulb, try cranking while hitting key switch choke/primer. If it does not start, assume then it is lean. So first thing to try is the open throttle/no choke. You can't really tell easily if it is flooded or lean. If lean, you need to squeeze fuel bulb, then use the choke (primer, really) with throttle just cracked open. If flooded, open the throttle fully and crank, it should eventually clear the flood and start. With these old two strokes, if it does not start, it is either flooded or lean. With EFI, you turn the key and it simply starts. When it fails to start, what things have you tried? This is a carb'd two stroke and starting is not like a modern EFI motor. So.what is going on with this motor? Do I have a stuck carburetor jet? Do I have a fuel pump problem? Do I have a Mercury 2 stroke problem? I know I can't live this way. Exhausted, we got to an oyster bar and the so got out to hold us in place and pull us the 100 yards to the other side. Yes, I could have called Sea Tow again, but I was too pissed and embarrassed to call them on a busy Saturday.so we started paddling the 1/2 mile back to the ramp.against the tide and into the strong head wind. We waited, we fished the tided started coming in, the boat still would not start. Yesterday, me and the son took the boat out, fished a creek the creek the boat ramp was on.ran great, until we got ready to call it a day, boat would not start. Got the boat home, it fired up first turn of the key. He waited, never would start.called Sea Tow and they pulled him to the dock. Got the boat home and it started right up.Įarlier this summer, my son took the boat out for some creek fishing and when he got ready to leave, the boat would not start. We fished some more, hoping it'd "fix" itself, but it never did. When we got cold and tired and decided to call it a day, the motor would not restart. Last December, me and a friend took it out and idled around some docks and back creeks and then decided to run up the ICW a few miles and fished some flats. It's a fun little outfit and we have had a lot of fun with it as our second boat. We bought a used 13' Boston Whaler with a Mercury 40hp 2 stroke motor.
